Oaxaca "Mountains-to-the-Sea" Hiker

Hike, Kayak, Explore Archaeological Sites and Sample Ancient Cultures from Mountains to Sea

Hike through remote mountains and ancient villages. Explore the world class archeological sites of the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. Experience the vibrant craft traditions of Oaxaca's pueblos. Then relax in the luscious warmth and tropical splendor of Mexico's secluded Oaxaca coast.

Days 1-2 City of Oaxaca-Monte Alban. After transfering from the airport to your hotel, explore the Zocalo, Oaxaca's historic plaza, with it's bandstand, artisan shops and outdoor cafes. The following morning we visit the mysterious ruins of Monte Alban, ancient capital of the Zapotec culture. We return to nearby Oaxaca for a walking tour of its historic center.

Days 3-6 Mitla-Sierra Norte-Zaachila-Oaxaca. Today we visit the ruins of Mitla, first occupied in 900 B.C., and then visit local artisans who demonstrate the dying and weaving techniques practiced for 300 years. Two days of hiking through the forests of the Sierra Norte take us through fields of wildflowers and giant agaves. Pine, oak and cedar dominate these beautiful forests and bromeliads and wild orchids bloom in the spring. Home-cooked meals and interaction with the locals highlight our stay in the community cabins. The bustling market of Zaachila concludes our visit to the Oaxacan countryside.

Days 7-9 Puerto Escondido. A flight to the tropical coast delivers us to the fishing village of Puerto Escondido. A free day provides ample time to bike, tube the Colotepec River, visit Chatino villages, or just relax with a walk along the beach. The next day's hike takes us to a secluded, idyllic jungle waterfall and pool. Then we kayak through Laguna Manialtepec, home to 270 bird and animal species. We fly back to Oaxaca City on the final morning to connect with flights home.
